How to fix plugged in, not charging on windows 10

wind plugged in. not charging fix

Your Windows Laptops charge is low. So, you plugged it in for charging. It shows plugged in.
But instead of charging it just shows: Plugged in,  at the same time it shows not charging.

As a result, it refuses to charge. And this can be quite a problem. Cause your laptop simply can't run on battery power alone.
Don't worry. Unless your battery/adapter is damaged this problem is easy to fix. It's actually a common problem for Windows 10 users. Especially when you have recently updated your Windows 10 from a Windows update.

Why plugged in but not charging occurs?

There are a few reasons for your windows laptop to stop charging even when it says plugged in.
Those are:
  1. You or your windows may have updated the Laptop through Windows Update.
  2. A software is stopping from charging.
  3. Your Laptop battery / Adapter may be damaged.

Before we go to more practical solutions it is good to make sure if your power supply is working properly.
  1. Verify that you are using the AC Adapter that came with your Computer/Laptop or you are using Adapter of the same model.
  2. Check if your adapter wire has any knicks. Or if there is any problem with Power cords.
  3. Make sure you are plugging the adapter in a primary power source/ outlet.
If abovementioned points are ok then you can try below solutions.

Solution One:

Windows 10 rolls out updates frequently with security patches, bug fixes, general improvements, and other new features.
Sometimes those updates also bring bugs. Some critical, some minor and easy to fix.
One of them is plugged in but not charging.
And like other minor driver bugs after this can be simply fixed by disabling/ uninstalling drivers.

Goto your PC's device manager by right-clicking start and then choosing Device Manager.

Click the battery section of Device Manager.

Then uninstall both Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
Note that you will be uninstalling device drivers. Fear not. As they will re-install after a reboot.

uninstall device driver win 10

Now restart your PC. Your problem should be fixed now.

Solution two:

If the first method hasn't worked then the problem may be caused by a Software. To be more specific, a software that is pre-loaded by your Laptops manufacturer.

Asus and Lenovo both have Asus Battery Health Charging and Lenovo Energy Management respectively.
Both have the same functionality.  Which is prolonging your battery life by stopping charging at a certain point like 60% or 80%.

If you are a new user of These two brands then you may not know about this feature. So, if you have somehow enabled this feature, then this may very well be the cause for plugged in not charging of your Laptop.

Just open those apps and set them to 100% mode.

For ASUS:

Open Asus Battery Health Charging and change your mode to Full Capacity.

For Lenovo:

This time open Energy Management by going to System Tray/ Notifications > Lenovo Energy Management > Go to Settings > Turn ON Battery Full-Charged Mode.

Note: UI may differ from model to model.

Solution three:

This one is practical. And should be followed only when the above 2 methods failed.
And advised not to do yourself if you aren't comfortable with removing the battery, checking wires, etc.

Unplug the AC Adapter.
Remove the battery. Please ignore this step if yours is unremovable or still has a warranty.
If you were able to remove the battery then check if wires are all in good condition.
Plug in the AC Adapter again. If the power LED glows, then wire up to battery is ok. Either your battery has a problem or an OS bug is causing this.
Unplug the adapter for safety then insert the battery again.
Start your laptop.
Plug in the adapter again and see if your problem is fixed or not.

Hope these methods have fixed your problem. If you know any other steps that can fix this error then please do mention.
